Kobe changed his jersey to start the second half of his career sort of like a fresh start. All the drama of Shaq, the Colorado case, etc will end with the number 8. He chose the number 24 to show his hard work ethic which is 24 hours a day. Saying that he works 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Kobe and Odom is 24/7. It also helps if changing your number will also increase your jersey sales.

Kobe will never surpass Jordan not even LeBron can Surpass Jordan. There is only one Michael Jordan in the NBA and no one can replace him. Kobe won the championship with Shaq but look at him now, Kobe-Shaq=NO CHAMPIONSHIP. If he thinks he's better than Jordan then his dreaming, living in his own fantasy world. Lets face it if Michael Jordan was in his prime, he would take Kobe to school all day, everyday, 24/7...Kobe is just a showboat! peace!Ã

Late in the season, it was reported that Bryant would change his jersey number from #8 to #24 at the start of the 2006-07 NBA season. #24 was Bryant's first high school number, before changing to #33.[3] After the Lakers' season ended, Bryant made a television appearance on TNT, where he stated that when he came into the league, he wanted #24, but it was unavailable. He also wanted #33, but he couldn't, because it was already retired by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's number. He went on to say that he believed the new number signified the start of the second half of his career.

Maybe its his way of establishing a personal goal of becoming better than MJ. It's his decision. He won't be satisfied with just equalling Jordan's accomplishments: he wants to surpass them. And that's the stuff that makes winners and champions.
