It's because his 'hit' Looking For Freedom brought about the reunification of Germany and brought the Berlin Wall crashing down thus saving us all from international communism. At least according to the man himself that's why.

The Germans love Hasslehoff because he, like them, is clinging desperately onto the eighties like a shipwrecked man lost at sea, clinging on to a novelty inflatable in the shape of a lobster for dear life. They have a mutual emapthy for each other and it's something the rest of us will never understand. It's almost a symbiosis between them and we'd do well to leave it alone. So don't go asking questions like this again.

Why couldn't they love him, what's wrong with that? What about the English people worshipping Victoria Beckham? What talent has she got? The Hoff is a TV legend! Knight Rider was a big hit not only in Germany. And everybody watched Baywatch- especially those who wouldn't admit it.

If you wanted to create some hatred with your question, I think you managed that, well done.
P.S. I'm not German.

That really is strange. Good question.
He's almost talentless & a bit arrogant.
Maybe they identify with him.
I think he had a massive hit album in Germany as well even though he can't sing. It's wierd.
We can hardly talk - in Ireland, incredibly we somehow made Ronan Keating big but I think we've realised our mistake, with HOFF, the Germans haven't.

Have you heard any examples of German pop music? The Hoff beats them all, which is really sad.....

I think it's his German sounding last name and that charming smile of his (back in the 1980s on Knight Rider, everyone thought he was quite the stud!).

Is it the contribution towards the German GDP that he always provides during Ocktoberfest?
What?
So sue me.
