Amerigo Vespucci. However, he didnt realise that he had come across an undiscovered land. So, the credit went to Christopher Columbus. America is named after Amerigo Vespucci.

Well technically that would have been the native americans - although the debate as to where the first native americans came from is open. Popular theory has been that the first natives came to North America from Asia over the land bridge that formed across the Bering Straight during the last ice age. However there are some clues to suggest that some of the earliest settlers in North America may have come from Europe, and to be specigic France (the Silutrians - sp?). In either case, people have been here for around 20,000 years or so.
The reason for the possible connection to the Silutrian culture are in how they made their spear points - they were very similiar in style and design to the clovis spear points found in North America. The Asians of that time used a very different type of stone working technology and didn't even use spear points - how would a population coming from one region completely change their technology when migrating to a new region if they didn't perhaps meet with another population already there with a superior technology that they decided to adopt?

Technically it is some unknown American Indian. Most people think they came across from Siberia where the Berring Staits are now located. It would have been at a time when due to the climate sea level was lower--and there was a lond bridge.
The first European to indisuputably reach North American was the Viking Lief Erickison. This was some 500 years before Columubus.
Columbus was the one who gets all the credit as being the first Eropean to reach America. And it was his voyage which is historically most signifigant--since it started the exploration and colinization of the Americas by Europeans.
There are some other peoples who may have reached America. There is evidence that the Japanese and Chinese may have landed on the west coast. This does make sense since the Japanese current would easily sweep a boat from Asia toward the west coast of North America.
Some people also think that druids may have reached the East Coast.
It has been hypotisised that the Phoenecians also reached the Americas. The culutre of the Aztecs and Incas is curious in that it is not typical of much of American Indian culture which may indicate an influence of people from the Middle East having reached the Americas.
But if this is a homework deal--I am sure the answer Columbus is all you need.

America was first discovered by the Ancient Hellenes (Greeks)!
There is a dialogue between Alexander the Great and someone called Diogenis of Sinope (Διογένης ο Σινωπεύς)
Alexander once approached a wise man who lived inside a jar. This man, Diogenis, met with Alexander quite a few times.
Once Diogenis told Alexander: "Even if you conquer the whole Europe but you don't benefit your people, then you are not beneficial. Even if you conquer the whole Africa and Asia but you don't benefit your people, then you are not beneficial. And even if you pass the Pillars of Hercules (todays Gibraltar) and travel the ocean and conquer that land/continent that is bigger than Asia, but you don't benefit your people, then you are not beneficial".
Through this dialogue we can clearly understand that the Ancient Hellenes knew about America, so they were the first to discover America.

Asians. They came over during the last ice age on an ice bridge that connected Alaska to the northern part of Asia. The first white people to discover america were my anscestors, the vikings. Then Christopher Columbus discovered some islands off the coast of America, I forget which ones now, but never reached the main land. Amerigo Vespuci was next to "discover" the mainland of America, thus where it got it's name.

The Piazzale Michelangelo (The Michelangelo Square) is one of the places you should see in Florence. This square is really a large, partially pedestrian zed square situated across the Arno River from the hub of Florence. From the square visitors have a spectacular view within the city. The roomy square was presented in 1860 by Giuseppe Poggi, a nearby architect who is also noted for his formation of boulevards across the centre of Florence. Located at the center of the city's major market section, the Basilica di San Lorenzo is one of the oldest churches of Florence and was the burial place of all key customers of the Medici family. The Chinese in 1421.

Amerigo Vespucci was born in Florence, Italy in March of 1451, 30 years after the Chinese discovered America. Eskimos (Esquimaux) were described as "a new stock" by anthropologist Thomas Huxley in 1865. Something more than 400 years old doesn't seem like it could be described as "new stock." Certainly the native Americans did not "discover" America, that's why they're native.
