My girlfriend has been to Goa a couple of times before and she absolutely loves the place. In fact she's going back in November and I will be going, too.

Now having seen many photos of the place, I'd have to say that Goa does not photograph well! It looks like just some beaches and the roads are red dirt roads. I get the impression there is nothing much else to do than sit on some plastic B&Q type chairs, drinking beer. And from what I hear, the locals harrass you constantly.

So what's the main reason people go to Goa?... I hope it's not just to "Lord it" over the natives. I'm interested in other peoples opinions of the place.

And I don't want to hear comments about how the place has been "spoiled" or "it isn't as good as it used to be" etc. I can't be bothered with that rubbish. You could say that about ANYWHERE. Thank you.

I'm currently in Mumbai - having just done a tour of India.

Goa is, compared to the rest of India - wonderful. You are right in thinking that it is a bit 'rough' around the edges. It isn't as clean as European beach destinations and you do get hounded to buy bracelets. Me and my friends found it easy to overlook the untidiness and found the street sellers quite amusing in their persistence.

It's true that it is incredibly cheap - sharing a lovely room between three for about 500 Rupees a night - about 2 quid each. Beer is about 70 pence a pint and the service in the many many restaurants and bars in friendly and relaxed. If you want plastic chairs, cricket on the beach and cheap beer then you can get it. but equally if you want well run, slick European style restaurants and stunning churches then you can get it. Obviously a generalisation but Goans are really nice friendly relaxed people. Nothing like Indians! Ha

It's really busy in peak season, but the weather is nicer and the beaches become longer. Prices can triple though.

Just check it out - there are loads of beaches, all with different crowds and attractions. It's cheap and you can even venture out to see the way that real India works. If you are feeling brave!

My partner's sister stayed there for 6 weeks in a chaley on the beach there. From pictures I've seen it looks lovely. I think people go there because its isn't an 'English' tourist destination yet, meaning there are no package holidays like First Choice, and all the rest and the place isn't full of Macdonalds, Burger Kings and Chippys on the corner, and because it is very cheap and you can stay for a long length of time for a very reasonable price on a beach. She went 2 years ago, so agents and package holidays might have started up there now though. She had a great time. Go before all the tourists set in an ruin it! Its in my list of places to go. Get a book about it with pictures and you can see for yourself of what to do there and what the cuisine is like.

You are right in your observations. The fact that it is cheap is a big draw, also the oportunity to experience and mix with new and truely new cultures. Go for a long time, and see the rest of ndia, thats when it gets real fun!
Have you booked yet? wy fly charter? try BA to Bombay/Mumbai (book by 26th this month its £309, and a hell of a lot more comfortable than the likes of Monarch), spend a few days in Bombay, then fly to Goa for £15ish,
