The "g" in the top left hand corner actually stands for gprs. This is the speed in which your phone connects to the internet (very similar to dial up). Depending on the company you are using say if the company is "gsm" they can run off of edge data or gprs, if you are on edge data an e is what you will find on your screen not a g

it means that your internet gprs is on constanty. change this in the menu to "when needed" as you are constantly connected and possibly being charged for it
