I own the physical disc of a dvd, i went out and bought it, and i plan on buying an MP4 player, or a video player like the archos av 500, my one problem is, how do i convert dvds to either MPEG, AVI, or MP4 formats? and how long will it take for a 1.3 hour video? what files do i need, what ones are free, and what ones are awesome?

DVD Decrypter along with DVD Shrink will do the job for you. DVD Decrypter will burn copyright-protected DVDs. DVD Shrink will shrink your movies if they are too big to fit on the disc. Depending on the speed of your system, it can take anywhere from 15 minutes to a half hour with the DVD Decrypter to read and write the disc. If you have to shrink it, it may take a little longer. The DVD Decrypter and the DVD Shrink are both free. You just need to know where to look. They are both awesome. I use them both all the time.

I converted the shreik movie to 128mb file for playing on my PDA. the rendering took 4+ hours, (I just left it running overnight)

In the end i needed to use 2 programs, DVD shrink to strip off any extra coding and the menus, and the program that came with the PDA to transfer it to portable media size
