shows how screwed up we are.
Our bodies are the package that we came in and we as western society do everything to try and change that . We have a society full of people(women esp) who have no idea what they actually look like. Most everyone is uncomfortable with their bodies... I think it's because of the screwed up christian faith that things are like this. I have breasts and if they are firm and big and beautiful it's okay to flaunt them with what I'm wearing but if I choose to breast feed my baby in public....that's gross...not natural!?!
I wonder the same thing too. Violence is so accepted it is soul breaking. Real or made-up....acts of violence or terror against another should be socially unacceptable.

This is not a dumb question. People are crazy that's why. You can put pasties on nude people, but both are marketable and sometimes enjoyable if it's fake. I think people should be more-open minded about this stuff, if artists are going to be artists they better own up to it. You didn't see Michelangelo covering up David from nudity. There was nudity on that new show Smith the other night, wasn't there? I guess the dead people aren't going to get embarrassed if they're killed only nudity embarrasses.

I have often wondered about this. It shows what a screwed up sense of values society has. True the killing is not real on TV and in the movies, but it is often as lifelike as the real thing, and it is intended to depict the real thing in all its gory details, so there is no difference. Why, would it be ok to show cartoon nudity and hard core porn because it is not real?

Screwed up sense of values of all of the world. Makes no sense whatsoever. But apparently, we humans (because this is not a region, race or culturally dependent thing) think it is offensive to see a naked body, but not offensive to see me killing another human being.

The weirdness of it all is, if you had to replace sheep for humans in a gory movie, I am sure that the press and animal rights advocate and all of the world would scream at the tastelessness of it all!

About killing, war, real violence: Maybe beacause showing killing of people is "pointing the finger" to others, you are contributing to society by condamning and blaming the villains so it makes you look good! Also it makes your audience feel so much better about their own security and protection!

about violent films: it sells the adrenaline that is missing from the average homo teleopticus.

While if showing nude would be with no reason (ok, amusement) and also you would be characterised as "innappropriate". (maybe you also pay fines?) It's not contributing to anatomy or sexual education!!

NOT religious but political bias...
goes back to the Puritan ethos...
so, nudity/sex are evil, nasty, vile things that warp children's minds....but violence is part of the vengeful god idea and therefore is more of a behavior modification technique

However, if you go to Europe....the [nearly] exact opposite views are held..
bodies are not inherently evil, but violence is

it used to be true that American "crime" shows...ones with a significant amount of blood and guts/graphic violence were not shown until "later" in the evening so that children would be less likely to see them....

In Japan....modesty persists...unless you look at some of their "anime' ".....since they are cartoons...anything and everything goes...

I think it is because our American puritanism is more concerned with whether we enjoy watching something than whether watching is harmful. It is assumed that we really don't enjoy seeing dead bodies. I'm not sure that is a valid assumption looking at the most popular tv shows and movies, but it is a cultural expectation that we seem disgusted.

this all depends on network vs cable vs cable PPV...
but totally nude on the big 4 are non existent...due to in house censors to adhere to FCC regs.... (remember Janet at Superbowl?)

of course HBO et al can expand this as it is requested service one pays for, and of course, one may say the most course is reserved for PPV (Pay per view), the most graphic almost all would agree with do to not only paying thru subscription, but also going 1 step further to actually and actively requesting specific programs...

the basic network "standards dept", not unlike the MPAA (movies) rating system, are both complex and confusing formulas, both both seem to be more acceptable to violence over sex and or nudity, as sad comment on our society.

If your talking about on tv shows or movies, the killing is not real, you can't fake nudity though.

This is a pretty dumb question, with all due respect.

The standards are not related. Television finds the violence marketable. They probably would find nudity marketable as well, but the industry has not chosen to market it.

because the censorship boards in most countries think that sex is bad but violence is ok. it's really strange... i live in a country (malaysia) that censors sex, homosexuality and nudity in all entertainment but doesn't censor/block out violence (well, it does cut out extreme violence and graphic depictions).

It really does make you think that they're endorsing violence when in reality, people have sex everyday and that's ok, but violence is not. Strange.
