Because their husbands haven't learnt to pay the adult card and have been putting it around.
And it isn't most of the women! It is mostly married women which is rather different.

That's not true, unless I can be proven wrong. Any races can be affected with HIV/AIDS -- not most of the African women from my knowledge. And if that's the case, it must have to do something with history -- rapes, drugs, so on. I do not know.

hi there
the term 'most' is actually wrong. it may be right when the issue of regionality comes up, with that i mean different parts of africa.
it has been established that the aids scourge is heavy on the east and southern africa region than in the west and the north. though i'm from the west, the ratio of plwha is less.
on your question, it has to do with gender inequality and the lack of education/non liberalization of our women. african men being predominantly polygamous, ie living with 1-6 wives and additional concubines, will sum up to one hiv/aids man can pass the virus to,say, 10-15 women, which will inturn pass it to children through breast milk etc.
also in the central/east africa, a crazy belief came about that virgin girls can cure hiv/aids. that resulted to massive rape of pre teens and early teens girls. these girls have or will one day mature into womens and the attendant results will be bad as well.
our seemingly unwillingness to share equality with our women in africa, as per to giving them the opportunity to be self assertive as the men will be tend to be one other case, as saying no to sex, early marriage, even to men their grand father's age, is perceived as a taboo, deprivation of higher education, believing in the notion that a woman's place is in the kitchen etc. all tend to expose our women more with the infection of the deadly virus.
i hope this quells your curiosity.
