"Chronic heartburn and acid reflux put you at risk of GERD and Barrett's esophagus because the esophagus is
DESIGNED to carry food and liquid only one way: from your
mouth to your stomach."
I thought life evolved and was not designed?

vinzklort... evolution is not a designer it is just accidental.

freebird designs require pre-planning. Evolution cannot plan.
And no it is not desperate it is actually an admittance that life is designed it is how it could all come about logically.

Might I just remind everyone that it is the THEORY of evolution, it's not proven fact as there are many missing links that have not been found yet. Personally I think evolution is a load of s***, but that's just my opinion

yes, we did evolve... apparently!!! Going with this theory of evolution the parts of the body didn't evolve. They appear in all different species including the ones we evolved from and they each serve a different function. I think when they use the word "design" they mean it to be the function of the esophagus. But yes this saying could contradict the theory of evolution if viewed in a certain way. Wow this is a really deep question and difficult to answer. I hope I helped at least a little.

Seriously? Your best stab at against evolution is the semantics of a sentence from a science book?
Kinda desparate, ain't it?
In case you're seriously thinking this is a point, sad as that may be, of course biological designs evolve. That's what evolution is.

Evolution designed the esophagus.
Edit: Arguing against evolution is like arguing against gravity. Notihing is totally provable, and even though evolution is a "theory" as you like to say, it's a much more plausible theory than the theory of creationism, which requires the belief in magic.

figure of speech, as Nick L says and also the author might be thinking in a fuzzy muzzy sort of way on this and not be aware of what he said. Or he might be a closet creationist.

by design they mean function, really.
by design, if you like, you could mean "the sum total of all evolutionary changes thus far".
