Not too sure, but there was a Battalion formed in May 1942 which served in Palestine. Maybe your father served there.

Only that Pontius Pilots or Pontius Pilate was someone in Biblical history and that in Australia there's a group called The Independents

Perhaps it is a corruption of Fleet of Foot when squaddies marched.
Perhaps they were the ones who planted those flags saying H.D. was here? There was never anyone around?
Quite annoying for Sappers and Underwater Frogmen making things safe for the Marines or Commandos followed by the rest.
Never mind we couldn't have done without them, as they say.
I'll leave the Pontius Pilot bit! ! !

if your grandad was from fortingall, or the regiment was formed in fortingall scotland it is the reputed and disputed birthplace of pontis pilate. maybe thats how they got the nickname.
