I have heard that it is better to get up and do something, however this has never worked for me. I have found that laying there and occupying my mind by "watching a movie" that I make up, tends to help me fall asleep. I guess the movies I "write" are pretty boring because this method works well for me.

I'm still trying to figure that one out! I've had hard time switching off my mind at bed time forever, now!
I think it's better if you don't get up and about or your blood circulation will be more activated and that will make your heart pump faster-which would keep you awake and anxious.
I've tried anything you can imagine and sometimes only a sleeping pill will do (and sometimes not even that will work!..)!
Praying seems to help as well, but sometimes I just get impatient and don't do it. So, I try reading or "playing with myself" (if you know what I mean!..), and that works sometimes too!
Good luck finding your special way of relaxing!

I find that supressing the urge to get up and do something (like drawing, listening to music, or scalping the neighbor's dog) is extremely detrimental to my sleep quality.

That is to say, I cannot readily fall asleep knowing I've neglected an urge to get up. Unless I'm on downers.

I'd rather stay in bed. That way, even if I don't sleep, I'm at least resting. If I get up I will just get myself even more awake.

Well I'm up now aren't I? Gosh, you'd think it was easy trying to relax when all you truly want to do is get up and answer questions like this. I say good day!
