I've had mixed experiences with Skype when calling a landline/mobile (SkypeOut) - lots of echo etc. although a rate of 2c a minute instead of 40c a minute made it able to live with. Currently I am using the telephony module in Windows Live Messenger - Verizon operate it and have found it very good.

VOIP works for us. We got rid of our landline and now have several numbers but retained all our existing phones incl cordless etc. With relatives in Australia it's also allowed us to give them a local Oz number to call us for the price of a local call (for them). It's saved us a lot of money.
