I'm just wanting to know if there is a way to get transparent .PNG files to show up transparent in IE, or if they have a gray background for a reason.

IE 5, 6 dosen't support transparency of the png files.
You can try this in css:

Both .PNG and .GIF allow background to be set to transparent (background of the html being displayed)... (JPEG and BMP don't allow this).
Looks like IE has default background of grey.. which is displayed... Try opening the image in Windows Image previewer and check.

Many record formats help sparkling/alpha/mask background. GIF and PNG the two do to a pair degree. the bigger undertaking is what environment will show the image considering the fact that many do not help all the effective properties of a given record format.
