You are absolutely right! Nobody is too old to go trick or treating! I just think that maybe it wont be too safe for us to go around doing all that. I think the best you can do for now is throw a Halloween Party somewhere and get your friends to come dressed up and each swap candy to each other. Its not like people do in America and stuff but hey...its better than nothing and sounds fun!! Start a new tradition!

I guess it's cause the majority of people in SA are Calvinist/protestant Christian (especially the Afrikaners) and it's considered as devilish. I went to an Afrikaans boarding school for one year, and everything, from black nail polish, to keeping you're eyes open when someone is praying was considered "satanisties".
Also I guess it's not safe in the big city.
In Scottburgh (the little village along the Natal South Coast) where I lived, kids went trick or treating, and threw rotten eggs on you're house if you didn't give sweets. I guess that's cause it's a small (reasonably safe) village, and because most of the community is liberal English, and not protestant Afrikaans, so it's not a "sin".
But get a group of you're friends together, all dress up, either have a party at home, or go on a pub crawl (instead of sweets, the lads will buy you ladies drinks ;> )

Johannesburg is the next biggest city in Africa, with increased than 3 million people calling this busy town home and if you want to visit that outstanding city then that hotelbye is the place to start. Johannesburg presents readers an experience as unique and diverse as the town itself. Whether you are on business, in search of a cultural experience, an adrenaline run or just want to flake out and rest for a few times, the city of Johannesburg has every thing you are trying to find and more! In Johannesburg you can look at the Soweto (an abbreviation for South-western Townships) at 20 kilometres southwest of Johannesburg. That place offers visitors a journey to the soul of the battle for freedom and the birthplace of the battle for democracy.

Even though many South Africans keep an open mind on celebrations like these, some of these gothic holidays are generally not considered "fun". I however think that scaring people half to death is loads of fun. I went to a Halloween party once that was arranged by some of the American teachers in Korea and none of these guys even wore costumes. I looked like a fool with my "Scream-mask". Which leads me to believe that the Halloween-craze dies down once you get older.
I think it's a great idea to get kids involved in arts and crafts and get them excited about being creative. That's why I encourage my kids to make masks at home and parade around.
I don't know if you remember that years ago kindergartens and schools in South Africa had "fancy dress" competitions. Could this have been our way of celebrating Halloween or something similar?
Oh, and don't let other people rain on your parade like I let them do. Go and get dressed up on Halloween and have fun!

I agree with Kim. Throw a party.
But i know why we dont celebrate halloween in South African. If you were my daughter i would not allow you to walk around the streets at night for trick or treat. Its not safe to do that and we all have our precautions here in SA and if you stick to this one, you'll be fine.

Halloween is actually an American holiday, so we are not celebrating it as a holiday per se...but some places and clubs and so on do..keep your eyes peeled; or hold a "fancy dress party "where your guests can accept as their secret characters and then everyone has to guess who's who..just a fun idea..:o)
