Sounds to me like the mobo is fried. As long as the drive that was working in another machine still works in the drives original machine after you installed it into the "dead" PC.

Lightning, as an insurance adjuster I'd see it frequently, check the other low amp items in the house., phones, doorbell, clock radios. Your friend may have a claim. Power surge is much the same, some electric companies have very sophisticated equipment that can detect surges or the cause of the spike. Could have a claim against them if it is their fault. If it is a buried cable coming from the box into the house, they can start to deteriorate or have root damage after 20 years and develop a short. This generally causes major problems and this is generally not covered.

If it got too hot inside the case, maybe. Or a power surge could take out multiple things at once. Or the electrical interface on the motherboard going to the drive could have smoked, taking the drive with it, or vice versa. None of them are all that likely, but possible.

Short circuit on one and caught another one to be damaged.

Does the PC still boot to bios when it has no Hard drive ? or the Pc does not power up at all ?
