I have a HP officejet 5610 for 1 year and it works great.
I have recommend this printer to a few of my customers of my computer business and I've had no complaints.

Lexmark makes good inexpensive printers and many stores carry their ink cartridges, like Costco. I used to use one of these at work to print 8" x 10" photos and they always came out great looking. The ink cartridges are expensive, but I guess they are for most printers these days.

Personally I prefer my HP All In One 7400 series printer, but it's spendy at nearly $400. It's a fax, copier, scanner that can go wireless, prints 4" x 6" photos, 8"x 10" photos, and works beautifully. It's one "oddity" is that when I start my Dell, I have to have the printer off because my Dell computer won't boot otherwise. Soon as the Dell is done booting up, I can turn on the printer and have no problems.

hp do a very good range of printers which have excellent colour reproduction, are fast, and best of all have lowish running costs (ie cartridges are relatively cheaper than a lot of other brands such as lexmark).

Don't go near lexmark they cost a fortune to run. The cartridges are really expensive. Their ploy is to offer you cheap printers and then hit you everytime you need a cartridge.

my dad went to FRYs and got me an HP before school started. it is a printer, copier and scanner all in one...and most of the times you can get the rebates ...it works great, i dont have any problems with it and my sister has the same printer as mine-it is a good quality one. take a friend or a relative who knows about printers with you...when you go shopping that is
