I love trains and find it shamefull that our goverment uses billions of dollars to subsidize the airline industry while stepchild Amtrak is lucky to receive the occassional table scrap.
Railroad travel is very relaxing, from the rythymic click-clacking on the track to the plush wider-than-airliner seats.
Many people complain about the time it takes to go from point to point but I find it no problem. If you are not in an absolute rush to get somewhere give railroad travel a chance. Riders can listen to music, read, or watch laptop DVDs, but my favorite thing to do is simply look out the window and watch the world go by.
Among many other trains, I have taken The Southwest Chief, The Sunset Limited, The Capitol Limited, The Lakeshore Limited, The Crescent, The City of New Orleans, The Coast Starlight, and The Pacific Surfliner.
If you haven't tried train travel give it a chance.

We used to live near a large airport. We could not only hear the airplane overhead quite often, but we were sometimes disturbed by a plane "revving its motor" during a middle-of-the-night tune up.
Now, we live near a railroad track and the sound of the train horn in the distance is soothing. Although I am not able to ride or either a plane or train, due to equilibrium problems, I do enjoy stories about both.
