The network key is something you use if you want to use the router wirelessly, but only allow certain people (like people in your house) to use it. Otherwise anyone within range of the signal can connect to the router and use it to access the Internet. That means next-door neighbors, maybe people parked on the street using laptops, etc. If you haven't turned on the security, the key isn't used.

The key is like a password you set when enabling security. Basically any computer which wants to access you router will have to enter the same key as the one you choose. Most routers can generate the key (a series of hexadecimal numbers) for you, all you do is choose a word (passphrase)

.

You have two options to create the WEP Key. A passphrase is easiest. Type any word in as a passphrase, and click Generate. ( If your network already uses keys, instead of a passphrase, or if your non-NETGEAR equipment will not accept a passphrase, you must use the key fields. Using all four keys is slightly better protection. Again, all wireless devices in your network must have the same keys. )

Go to the control panel of the router and click the security tab. Look under wireless and you will see the encryption key. I't a bunch of numbers and letters.
