Well .. I've been published three times.
Been paid for one.
In the trade magazines of my field.
My most recent was an opinion piece on the 'state of the art' and I was very happy to get the last page of the magazine with my picture also.
My next piece is on 'collaboration in the arts' and I hope it will be accepted -- so far I am three for three in submitting and accepting, and I know that's insanely lucky.
And, I won't be writing a novel -- but I do hope to write a book on Design that is not about equipment and tools but about concept and collaboration and composition.

This is an interesting Q... I've written three novels (and by that I mean over 130,000 words), and the first was crap, the second mild crap, the third brilliant (because it's a book I wrote for me and I love everything about it...). How does it feel? Even writing the first two crap-ish ones, it was exhilarating. I personally get giggly about the success. It's pride....after the many hours and hard work, there is this little pile of paper at the end of the rainbow. How can I not be thrilled when they're my lovely ideas (even the crap ones...they seemed good at the time).
If you're asking this because you're wondering if it's worth it, by god it is!
I wish you all the best of luck, because the joy of creating something the way you want to is brilliance itself.

I primarily write poetry, and that brings me a huge amount of satisfaction. It makes me feel alive to write, I just love it!
I did complete one novel through http://www.nanowrimo.com and that was very satisfying. The novel itself was complete garbage, but I'm very proud of it. It proved to me that I could write something with that kind of length, and I am currently world-building for a fantasy project that's been brewing in my brain.

I always wanted to write, but never set aside time. Now I write at least once a week. Just a small story, a paragraph or a couple pages, maybe just a good memory. I email them to my family or sometimes friends. I am proud of all of my stories. I am proud that I made myself do it.

What what was like? The book, or the experience? I am quite proud of my book "Candle Iron". It is one of the closest I've come to producing what I intended, and won an Aurealis Award. However, I also love my book "Recall", which DID do what I intended. Unfortunately, it is still stuck in a publisher's slush pile.

I wrote my graduate thesis. One hundred pages on the history of Irish politics.
I drank...err, celebrated... heavily when that was done.
