For actor, I'd have to say Morgan Freeman. A prisoner, God, a hit man, a driver, a boxing coach, the president. The man has a wider range than any actor I've ever seen. He can be funny, angry, congenial. While I love Brando, his range was limited to pretty much the same two characters: angry youth, and tired, mentoring old man.
For actress, I'd have to go with Katherine Hepburn. Her performance in The Lion in Winter and Long Day's Journey Into Night, are what they should show aspiring actresses. However, Natalie Portman is developing into a force to be reckoned with. From Closer to V for Vendetta, she's showing her range.

Marlon Brando. His performances in On The Waterfront and A Streetcar Named Desire were simply amazing. No actor today comes close to his brilliance. As far as actresses, either Meryl Streep or Katharine Hepburn.

There are to many fine actor/actress to choose just one or two. Even if you seperated the catagories by drama, comedy, etc. there would still be to many to choose from. It would be more correct to ask who is your favorite actor/actress of all time.
