If you want satellite reception in addition to your local broadcasts, the satellite provider will give you everything you need to receive HD from the satellite. You need to specify that you want HD service, and they will provide a HD receiver or DVR. You connect that to your TV with the HDMI or component cable. If you have an A/V receiver with Dolby Digital surround, these boxes also have digital audio output (either coax or optical) which you can connect to the A/V receiver.

You don't really need a dvr. I have satellite service with DirecTV. I upgraded to HD service in June. First it required a new, larger dish. This may or may not have to do with my geographic location (northern NJ). The larger dish and associated hardware "look" at five satellites. The DirecTV H20 is the receiver that was installed. Has all the basic functionality of my previous receiver plus an option to have the remote transmit in RF instead of infrared. A nice option.

The receiver has an input (F connector) for an external off-air antenna. I connected a uni-directional indoor UHF antenna to pull in the additional signals broadcast in my area. For the nYc market, DirecTV only supplies CBS, NBC, FOX and ABC broadcast HD signals, no WB (now CW), no UPN (now My Network) and no PBS. The addition of the antenna solved that problem. Through a simple on-screen set up of the receiver, the DirecTV box will seek and search for the additional signals and add them to channel listings in guide.

I have my DirecTV tuner connected via HDMI to my 37" ViewSonic LCD HDTV.
