Hi if you want to play games you will need at least directx 9.0c video card for modern the lowest is nvidea fx5200, or ati 9500 - maybe they are made by a 3rd party like pny or something but look for directx 9.0c (sometime it will say Cine Engine 2 or 3 on the box). This refers to the pixel shader pipeline Pixel shader 2 is just fine. Pixel shader 2 is directx 9 Don't get directx 8 card unless you dont have the money. For video card memory you need 128 mb at least, 256 would be better.

Speed wise you want at least a 3.0 ghz chip, if you can afford better then get better. Memory wise you really need at least 512 mb, more is better but 512 is still ok for now.

For mother board look at front side bus speed 333mhz or 400mhz, or 800mhz. Faster is better, - but don't forget the cpu memory and motherboard must all match!!

So this is what you need;
Ask for;

3.0 ghz cpu
Extra directx 9.0c compatible video card with at least 128 mb memory (some computers only have onboard graphics, but that won't be enough, you have to make sure they have the card!!).
At least 512 mb ram

Other than that you can get a cd/dvd re-writer drive, - this will read and write dvd's and cdroms.

Also you can get a "multi card" reader, this means you can plug in usb, or your camera memory or maybe your phone memory!!

For a hard drive at least 160 gb is good, 80 will be ok, but not really leass than that. Also if you do not have SATA, then make sure the hard drive is ATA 133 (or EIDE 133).

If you are not too worried about the best game graphics a directx 8 card would be ok, if you don't want to play 3d games then normal onboard graphics will probably be ok.
