I got hired by an accounting firm. I was supposed to start work in July. I asked for an extension so that I could study for the CPA exam. The firm gave me the time off I requested. Now, I start in October, and I realize that I still NEED more time to study...I am afraid to ask for another extension of time off because they might get tired and fire me, even before I start. They were already very generous with giving me the extension of time off. Studying for the CPA exam will be harder with my work obligation on top of that...It is very time consuming...I want to start work with a clear mind thinking I passed all 4 parts of the CPA exam before I start....any suggestions for me?

I am trying to figure out why you didn't think of this before you applied for the job???
That would be like if I applied at McDonalds to make hamburgers and then I wanted time off to study cooking...
My advice is to learn on the job...

While they are waiting on you to learn, they could hire someone who already knows how...

you are definitely very lucky to have a company giving you an extension as long as that. in my country, it would only take a maximum of a month, especially for new hirees.

you have to lay down the cards with them and be straight. tell them your dilemma and be honest enough that your productivity might suffer if you have your thoughts somewhere else.

however, be mature enough to accept whatever their decision is. their waiting could have given them losses already. if the company is still willing to wait for you, then be more than thankful by making sure that you will work for them after you have your CPA exams.

talk frankly and promptly with your employer and pose a similar question asking them what they recommend. To begin work now and study at your best pace while working or should you take more time to prepare then begin work. This way you not only demonstrate maturity and a team player approach to problem solving, but you give them a opportunity to let you know of any time constraints they may be under as well .
Good luck
