Your breasts are very sensitive to change. You will find the longer you wait between sessions, your milk supply will adjust. I have been pumping for the last 2 months because I had to go back to work. My supply has changed drastically because I just don't have the time to pump every 3 hours. I am battling to pump to get the right amount needed and wish I could turn back the clock and make time to pump every 3 hours! I suggest you freeze some of the milk that you have been expressing. Congratulations on your excellent choice of feeding!!

My lactation consultant had told me that I could lose my milk if I pumped too much, and that the best time to pump off is after the baby has fed and is content. And anytime I felt that I was very full, or could not feed my baby. Your milk supply will more than likely decrease, because the breast pump, yes, it is made to be like baby, BUT it does not get the back milk as effectively. Which, is the fattier milk that babies need. If you ever pumped off about 2 oz first off, then after a feeding you will notice the color difference. The first 2 oz should be a clearer, almost watery looking milk. The 2nd should be a yellower color. That is the fat in the milk. I think you should try finding a good lactation consultant. They are VERY helpful. :)

When I was pumping for my son while he was on a feeding tube I was told not to go more than 3 hours at first because I was not getting a lot. Even pumping every 3 hours I had a hard time and when he finally came home I had to put him on formula because I just couldn't keep up with how much he was eating.

Actually, if you have worked up to pumping every 4 hours, you may start to leak if you wait the extra hour. I breast fed my son for the first 3 months. I found that I often woke up wet if I didn't pump on time and sometimes even when I did. Everyone is different, but I don't think your production will dwindle at all.

Yes you can jepordize the amount of milk you get. I would say if you cannot nurse the baby, try your very best to pump at least every 4 hours. The less stimulation you get the less milk you will make. If you need help or expert advise, call the local La Leche Rep in your area, they are always happy to help. And please keep in mind, that if you are going to keep nursing when you go back to work (you really really should) that your employer cannot forbid pumping. Call the La Leche League.

The more you pump the more you will get. Supply and demand. The baby needs more as he gets older. Do you want to supplement? If not, keep pumping. Why don't you try breast feeding more often instead of pumping? It's not so exausting when you have little eyes looking up at you. good luck and congrats on your new baby. Keep up the great work!!!
