Depends - what kind of computer? NEWER computers can use Dual Channel RAM which must be installed in IDENTICAL pairs - but if your computer doesn't support dual channel, then it makes no difference. EXCEPT, your system board MAY NOT support larger sticks of RAM.

Dual Channel RAM is FASTER than Single Channel RAM. IF you don't install matched pairs properly, the system will run in Single Channel mode and be slower.

Your best bet is to visit web sites that sell memory like http://www.crucial.com or http://www.kingston.com and select your computer system/mainboard through their web selection tools and find out what exactly your computer supports.

First check your mother board manual where it is clearly given the maximum size of ram that each slot can hold. If each slot can hold 1 GB then you can put 2 1 gb sticks in two slots to get your 2 GB working. If the maximum size is only 512 MB then you need to put 4 sticks of 512 MB each. From what you said that the maximum size of memory is 2GB I presume that you have only 512 MB slots on your computer.

Well that all depends on the price of the sticks. Usually the bigger the sticks the higher price. So if you can get 4 sticks cheaper than I would get 4. But you also have to consider that you possible can use the same memory in a newer computer. especailly if you get the same brand.

If your sure it only supports 2GB, then I would just get 4, 512MBs. It'll be cheaper. If you have the money, 2 1G's would be okay, but I'd get the fastest you can. If it supports it, get PC3200. (DDR400) And if you are getting it offline, order it from http://www.newegg.com thats where I get my stuff, and they are cheap, and I've never had a prob. with them.

check to see if you have to install in pairs. Some are recommended to be in pairs and some can run with one or three rans on slot but in reduced rate.
