Formatting your hard disk would alone solve the problem. I know it involves lot of work of taking backup before formatting but sometimes you have to do the hard way to get rid of the problems.

Do a full disk check with surface scan before you defrag. Make sure you are not connected to the Internet when you defrag. You do have back-ups right? If you haven't wiped your hard disk and reinstalled Windows for over a year, now would be a good time to do that. Make sure you actually reformat your whole disk when you reinstall Windows.

Look for adware using Ad-Aware and Spy-bot Search & Destroy. They both provide free utilities. Also, if either your harddrive space or RAM are maxed out you will lose performance. If you have more than 75% of your harddrive full you may want to delete some stuff. If you have a lot of applications running in the background all of the time it will tax your RAM. A slow or over taxed video card can give you problems.

Restart.. type F8... and then then check where the routing goes to... and F8 before you enter windows to go safe mode. Then see details inside what causes it. There must be a conflict somewhere. Also, go to control panel, remove programs, and remove unnecessary files. If you have unlicensed programs, delete it. You need a lot of cleaning to do. Lastly, you might be infected with virus. Go to www.antivirus.com and do a House Call test if you have some parasites inside your PC.

You may commonly hear "virus," but chances are that you have an ad problem. Download Ad-Aware and clean out the residue from your previous downloads. If the problem persists, the cleanest plan is to create a back-up disc of all your IMPORTANT files and reformat the hard drive.
