tell you you need the rotors replaced when you get new brake pads? If you ask why they can't be machined, they always have some reason/excuse. Their advertised price of $50 ends up $250. What's a guy to do?

All rotors have a machine thickness and a discard thickness imprinted on them. Ask to see the old rotors and watch them being measured. Lots of rust will make machining difficult.
Stay away from cut rate national chains like Midas or Tire Plus. Find a good, reputable, local independent shop.
Make sure that they are ASE certified and ask to inspect the shop area. A clean organized shop is usually a sign of a competent and honest facility.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

The rotors can also be cut without being replaced. A decent honest shop(hard to find i know) will just put the pads on if thats all you need.

Tell them to button it back up and take it to a reputable brake shop for an estimate. Do not tell them you just got done being told you need rotors. Just wait for them to look it over. then decide.

First of all they want you to replace the rotors because they are expensive. Ask them to shave down your rotors. If they can do this you can save some money.

DEFINITELY take it to another shop.

Also...have the brakes checked once in awhile so you don't wear them down too low and then have to have the rotors reground.

Do it yourself. Most brake jobs can be done on your own for a cost of about $50 and couple hours of time -- And that's for all four wheels' brakes.
