See a gynecologist! You may have uterine fibroids, which causes Heavy or painful periods, or bleeding between periods or it could be the beginning of menopause.

There are a whole variety of reasons OTHER than Menopause that can cause irregular bleeding- from sexually transmitted disease to cervical polyps. Until you are able to be completely checked over by a doctor there will be no explination. There are simply too many factors and conditions out there to guess at. Your best bet is to go and see the doctor asap. If you have had this problem for a year or longer it is something that should worry you since you know your own body and what you expect from it. Never wait longer than a month to see if the symptoms clear up because you might be hurting yourself more than you know.

~Good Luck

First of all, DO NOT listen to the people telling you to get a hysterectomy. Such a major procedure should be a last resort.

DO LISTEN to those suggesting to go visit your OBGYN. He/She will know what to do.

Some things to consider:
1. Avg. age of menopause is 48 so you are in it.
2. What is sounds like is happening is that your progesterone levels are decreasing. Estrogen builds the endometrium (the lining of your womb) and this is the source of your period. Progesterone fixes the endometrium in place to prepare to receive a fertilized egg. If this does not happen, the progesterone level in your blood drops, and the endometrium begins to slough off and becomes your period. What it sounds like is happening with you is that your progesterone levels have declined or are so variable that your body keeps getting the "progesterone getting low - better start the period" message.

There are several options for you, depending on your medical history - you can discuss with your OBGYN.

Options might be:

HRT to smooth the transition (you didnt mention if you were having hot flashes or other menopausal symptoms)

Mirena (an IUD containing hormones) that can cause your endometrium to "go to sleep" to solve your bleeding problems

Other types of hormones that the OBGYN can prescribe, like straight progesterone to stabilize your endometrium. This is probably the one he will choose, but all of these options depend on your medical history, whether you have had children, and what medications you are currently taking.

Go see your family doctor or OBGYN. You are not alone, this happens to millions of women at this time in their lives. Go see the doc and he will definitely improve your quality of life. Don't worry, be happy '-)

You most likely are starting to go through menopause, because my periods got screwed up too when I started going through menopause. You need to tell your doctor though and let him/her check you out to see whether or not you could have some other problem.
