I would not make enough money in 32 hours to survive. I need to work at least 40. Lots of places don't like to pay overtime.

Sure! That way we'll be on our way to matching that economic powerhouse that also has the 32-hour work week, France.

BTW, the 40-hour work week isn't exactly law. I routinely work more than that. There are wage laws concerning overtime after 40 hours for people at minimum wage, but the cops don't come around and arrest you or your boss for going past 40.

I guess you'd be in favor of a "living wage", 100% taxes on income over $100,000, and "free" medical care?

The time is not right for that. China, India, Mexico, Brazil and a number of other developing countries have rapidly growing economies and can offer a cheaper worker. Companies will choose to outsource more and more of their jobs to lower-paid chinese or indian workers, which means fewer jobs in the US. This needs to be counterbalanced, not cut further - cutting 5 hours off every american workers' working week is equivalent to a reduction of 13,5% in the workforce!

A lower combined amount of working hours will mean less taxes, which is a huge problem because people are getting older and older and living maybe 30 years AFTER retirement. That's 30 years of no taxes paid and needing more and more health care. That's a big drain on a society which is gathering fewer taxes.

So, basically, the work week WILL be shortened one day, but right now, in the face of globalisation and a growing number of older, unproductive members of society, it would be a distaster to do it now.

I think it would be great as long as they take the 8 hours of pay from a 40 hour work week and add it to the 32 hour week.

There's no need for this in the United States. Work week hour restrictions are usually done to increase overall employment or average pay per hour. Since the USA has very low unemployment, it wouldn't make much sense for the government to pass such a law.
