Hmmm. Seems like you have gotten some confusing and/or inaccurate info already. You've said that your program accepts both. That is unusual but let's assume you've confirmed that.

The math is comparable on both. In fact the GMAT math is a bit harder (I've been teaching these tests for 15 years so I've got a pretty good idea of what's on there.)

The GRE Verbal section is more vocab based. This could slow you down. On the other hand the GMAT Verbal covers grammar and style and also a lot of logic type questions.

Your best bet is to do a diagnostic test of each, using actual paper based previous test materials. The GRE has a free one on www.gre.org. For the gmat you will need to buy a paper test. The paper tests seem to give a more accurate diagnostic score than the computer based practice material.

Do NOT use commercial materials, either paper or CD, as the score will be meaningless.

Both tests are very learnable but the patterns of the test are difficult to learn on your own. For more free info on the tests and on the rest of the admissions process, visit:

Dawn is right -- ask first. For the area of Communication, the GRE will probably be their selection. Business and Marketing, etc. are more inclined to use the GMAT.

Take GRE, it is much more generalized in content than GMAT, and the test itself is less rigorous. Good luck!

The question should be which test should be taken for graduate school in communications. Unfortunately, each school either accepts one test or the other. Also, the same is true for graduate degree programs. As a result, it is a good idea to ask each graduate school and its communication program you are interested in about which test they require for their admissions process before finding out too late.
