I would agree with Mom. She will let you know what it looks like and truthfully. Other people might say it looks good, knowing if the say something else it might hurt your feelings , I trust Mom's. My mom will tell me if I don't look good in something. She is someone I trust.

Here's the best answer. The first thing you should think about is who do you want to look good for? If you are like most girls the answer is typically "guys"! Unless you are a lesbian, then it'll be girls.
If you want to look good for guys, then wouldn't the natural thing to do is ask guys? Genius isn't it! I'm not saying that bring a girlfriend with you shopping isn't a good idea. However, even a better idea is to bring a guy friend with fashion sense and ask them if something looks good on you.
You can't get any better than that advise. You have to understand that guys and girls look at things differently. If you ask a girl, she may tell you it looks good, but a guy may not agree. Take for example, girls pay much more attention than guys on things that looks "cute". I don't know a lot of guys who rate things on "cuteness". LOL! So, if you're trying to look good for the men out there, you can't get a better advise than a man. This a good advise for all you girls, cuz I've seen girls giving bad fashion advise to each other if you're trying to look good for men.

Hmm , You really needed to word your question better, your college teacher would absolutely have the best answer, your mom too, and no do not waste your money on hair/cosmetic salon person, are you referring to a an advisor?
See your question is confusing, I read it twice, so re-phrase it.
But do learn how to dress and how to do your make up well and hair, shouldn't be difficult.

take a good luk at your mom, her clothes and the clothes she helped you chose for urself,, does it look bad? hideous? or out of date? if not,, then do not be ashamed to ask her opinion even if ur 21..but eventually you have to learn to choose your own clothes coz she wont be around all the time..choosing clothes with your mom is a good bonding time with her which you will appreciate even more as you grow older,,
its okay also to ask friends etc,, but if ur more comfortable with mom then go ahead..
by the way im also like you when i was in your age,, but eventually thru mom's fashion guidance and the magazines,, i now have my own style

I think the first thing you must begin with is yourself. What kind of person are you? Do you like certain looks? Do you like certain clothes? Do you like certain colors? Do you like frilly things? Do you like sporty clothes? And so on. It's tough to go to one source sometimes, especially when you're not so sure what looks good on yourself, and have them tell you what looks good on you. You have to have some different ideas before you can actually choose something for yourself. And just because someone gives you their opinion does not mean that it should be the fashion commandment by which you live. You can throw it out, honestly, and go for something YOU like and feel like you can walk around in saying to yourself that you look good in it. I'm of the opinion that people and magazines can give you just that - their opinion; how you wear it, how you carry yourself, how you feel about it all are totally up to you.
With that said, I would do several things: 1) Look at magazines - not so you can look like the models (cuz trust me, no one has 24 hour access to make-up artists, fashion consultants, and hair dressers) but so you can see what the trends are for the upcoming season. Pick out a thing or two that you like and go to the store to try it out. If it doesn't work, you'll know that.
2) Listen to your mom who tells you what looks good on you and see if you think it looks good on you. Or try it out - go out and see what others say - like your friends - or how they react. Make a mental note.
3) Ask your friends what they think looks good on you. Or people watch and see if you can find a look that you think is cute or cool, or whatever. Try them out, just like in #2. Make a mental note.
4) If you think your college instructor has very good taste in business attire but you don't think you should ask her, at least examine what she is wearing and see if you can pull of some of the same color-coordinations using casual attire or business casual depending on what your needs are. Go to the department store and TRY things on. Bring a friend whose opinion you trust to help you out. Make mental notes, or even actual notes if necessary.
Finally, it doesn't take a day or a few days to find out what looks good on you. It requires some exploring and getting to know yourself. And the point is not to look good for other people but to look good for yourself. So find what you like and are comfortable with, and chances are you will be able to tell soon enough what looks good on you.

Read magazines and decide for yourself? Only you knows what your style is or what you like... You could ask the people in the department store what colors go with your skin color (for makeup) and see what styles of hair are most flattering for your face shape. The opinion of your mom is valuable too if you feel she has a good sense of style and of what you like.

Hire yourself a consultant. They are paid not only to make you look good, but be honest with what does. Outside of that, Mom's usually are more honest than friends because Mom doesn't want you to look like idot/bum/fat when you go out, and your friends just don't want to tell you that the cute shirt you love makes you look pregnant.
Go to this page to find out what shapes look best on your body... i give these rules to my clients http://www.bbc.co.uk/lifestyle/tv_and_radio/what_not_to_wear/whattowear_index.shtml

theres shows you can watch that talk about fashion and about finding your personal style. You make the clothes look good, not the clothes making you look good. So what ever you do pick, just rock it and be confident, you will look gorgeous!

i say ask the person who has the best "eye" for it. in my family its my dad. i call him the fashion consultant. he has a great sense of color, pattern and style. he can match anything (unlike me) and tell me what looks good on ME.
ask both, compare and contrast (also ask some peers) then come to an individualized conclusion yourself. it will be YOUR style. and you'll look like YOU not like a copy of someone else....
