It depends on your needs. Mcafee offers several security products for pc, but personally, I prefer to use other software that comes cheaper or free (but reliable).
If you looking for free and reliable anti-virus, perhaps you can try AVG

Mcafee and Norton works OK, but they are heavy, bloated and slow down your system considerably. they take too much ram also.
Consider NOD32, one of the absolute best AV out there.. http://www.eset.com/products/index.php
I've been working in the IT industry as a Sysadmin for 10 years, trust me, I know what I'm talking about

3 things r must for a system to keep it healthy..
AntiVirus, Spyware, PC health tool ..
Dont use more then 1 AntiVirus and/or SpyWare software in ur PC. More AV/SW softwares will make ur sys. performance slow. and chances of system crash.
I would recommend AVG 7.1 free and spyware doctor 4.0 and system mechanic 6.0 as the best s/w for ur system health.
U can get them for free from www.9down.com
AVG holds very less system resources and works faster in background then any other AV.
It has no bulky animated alert popups. Fast and easy updates. Vast & Good virus database.
So, i would suggest u to uninstall all other s/w and just keep AVG, Spyware Doctor & System Mechanic and keep ur system Happy and GAY.
My system is alive and celebrating its 5th birthday.

Do you mean Mcafee, which makes anti-virus and other security products?
Mcafee makes OK products. There are much better and reasonably priced (READ cheaper) products in the market.
I am using Trend Micro's products (both home and office) for the past 7 years.
Following are some of the companies that make good anti-virus products
AVG Anti-Virus (http://www.grisoft.com/) - Offers a free version also.
F-Seucre (http://www.f-secure.com/)
Kaspersky Labs (http://www.kaspersky.com)
Sophos (http://www.sophos.com)
Trend Micro (http://www.trendmicro.com)

Download Avast
www.avast.com after install let it do a reboot scan.
It has no problems running in safe mode like norton and the rest.
