Just remember that the Gandhi of the movie, and the real-life guy, are two different things.

Very little of Gandhi's plans for India have survived. As you note, India was partitioned, and there has been a war with Pakistan ever since. There continues to be violence between religious groups.

In fact, India has been involved in several wars, and is part of the "nuclear club".

Gandhi also wanted India's economy to be made of house-based businesses, and that ideal surives in the spinning wheel that you see on the Indian flag. The truth, however, is that India is home to all or part of virtually every major multi-national corporation in the world, and is a global economic player.

So....

Gandhi of the movie didn't exist, with the real-life Gahdhi much less appealing. Gandhi of the movie, and of real life, didn't leave a legacy that surives in India in many key ways. He is a hero, but like all heros, we need to remember that he was far from perfect.

I would say he was and always be a hero. Again, a lot of conspiracies are there behind this famous person but at the end of the day, he has struggled a lot to get India & Pakistan too its independance. His non-violent movement is still doing rounds in other parts of the world.
