Some programmers can make $250,000 a year, but that's not the norm. Depends who you work for and how good your are. Starting salaries in the U.S. are somewhere between $30,000 and $50,000 depending on the type of firm you work at.

Now, if you're an experienced, expert programmer who heads a design team making some very important systems, for some very important people, you could make a real lot.

However, you asked about "computer engineers" and here we are talking about programmers -- do you mean a software engineer (a.k.a programmer), or an honest-to-goodness engineer (electrical or computer HARDWARE). They start higher than programmers.

Yes. Bill Gate et al seem to be doing okay.

Conversely, if you decide to be a doctor in a missionary hospital, or a ghetto clinic, or are just plain a bad doctor who can't run an office... yes, you will go broke.
