"Effective"- for doing what? I don't believe either one does much good as a deterrent. And as far as any kind of punishment goes, -I really don't think most murderers give much thought to the consequences of their actions when they're killing someone. At least a life sentence of hard labor- compensates Society a little for the crime the person committed. Capital Punishment is just an expensive way of getting vengeance on those who we think should pay the "ultimate price" for what the did.

Loaded question. More effective for who? The criminal or society?
Ill assume society because I could care less about the criminal in this situation.
Our capital punishment system takes too long and thats the reason its so expensive and not as "effective". At this point life is the best option but neither punishment seems to deter criminals.
I guess you just have to look at states that have it and states that dont. Even then it is hard to determine the effectiveness because most states that dont have it dont have metropolitan cities.

The finality of capital punishment is unquestionably effective at eliminatng one criminal. 'Life without chance of parole' is costly as hell and sometimes changes to 'with' the chance after some time.
