I'm a girl, so admittedly, my hands aren't as big as a guys, but still! There are plenty of girl guitarists. I took guitar for a year but stopped recently cuz my wrist always hurts so bad. I know I'm holding it wrong, but can't figure out how to hold it right.

Here's some imagery I used with my bass students when I was teaching:

The key is relaxation. Set your hand down, resting on your knee with your palm facing up, and let it relax. Notice that your fingers will curl. Now imagine holding a water bottle. If you were to crush it in your hand, the tip of your thumb will line up pretty closely to the tip of your middle finger. This is how the muscles in your hand want to work, and it's best to let them have their way. Consider these two hand positions and try to apply them to the instrument. Also, you should keep in mind that the fingers should be perpendicular to the strings as much as possible (except for when playing bar chords), and the thumb should definitely not wrap around the neck.

A musical instrument is merely a tool, and what we're trying to do is find the most natural and efficient way to manipulate it. Not always easy, and sometimes painful. Bottom line is that while there will be some soreness, it should not feel so crippling. Relax and take breaks if you need to. The endurance will develop over time as long as you let your muscles work the way they want to most naturally.

You have to find the comfortable way for you. There is no Right way, everyone is different and the size of peoples hands are different. Both my brothers are musicians, a guitar God and my brother that passed away(KC) was a Bass playing God also. When KC broke his wrist BAD he said it actually made it easier to play once it healed. He was playing guitar the year of his death.Bass and Guitar.Stop trying to do it any certain ways.Just relax and it will come.

Well, first of all, learn the right way to hold it. Second, you can hold your wrists down for about 20-30 seconds. That helps. I play bassoon, my wrists used to hurt also.

My dad always told me that if I made sure that my thumb was resting in the exact middle of the neck, I would be able to reach the strings better and it wouldn't hurt as much. It worked when I remembered to do it.

ok i am a gutiar teacher so i think i should know this

ok you can start by not wrapping you thumb around the neck it will be a little uncomftorable but you will get over it . your palm should not touch the neck at all. when ever you need to put your hand down for a min or two
