Why should we pay $5 billion a year to the UN?

The UN is the only place that allows true world discourse and dialogue. If it was not for the UN, as Americans, we would not know about Hugo Chavez until he did something far worse than call King George the devil.

And the UN is not a random group of people, they are respected officials from the countries of the world.

If they applaud Chavez after he calls Bush the devil, maybe the rest of the world hates W as well, or thinks he is the devil.

The rest of the world hates America because of its imperialistic foreign policy.

I suspect I will be labeled a 'libtard' or someone will ask me if I would like 'koolaid.'

But plain and simple, lots of the world does not like America... especially George W.

This has to be one of the dumbest questions I've heard today. Why? Because we are part of the UN. United Nations. The UN gives us a path to negotiate disputes with other countries besides humanitarian aid, health care research, and such a plethora of other things it boggles the mind. We'd probably be a nation of glowing nuclear craters without the UN. This is a bargain for what we pay. We couldn't possibly afford to do these things on our own. And you would throw out all of this good for one word from a clown like Chavez? Your stupidity is stunning. And by the way - why does the republican controlled government continue paying if it's so worthless? They've had 5 years to stop.

Agreed we are suckers! They should be evicted. I heard that Chavez made an invitation to Anan to move UN HQ's to Venezuela, I say Adios! Turn that building into a homeless shelter. And pay no more money to them either. The next time another country has an earthquake, tsnami, fires, floods or whatever they will all be screaming.."Why won't America help us?"

We should not! We ought to take Hugo up on his offer to move the UN to Venezuela. And do it yet this year. If he has it so together down there in his country, he'll make it happen. I think the people of New York City (and the United States) would really appreciate it.

The UN is a legitimate conduit through which we wield our influence throughout the world in a manner that appears democratic. Beleive me, with out the UN we would have many more enemies and a bigger risk of many nations banding together against us.

In short, the benefits of the UN still outweigh the costs.
