I don't agree with the second answerer...I did not mean America would be worse off...It will actually be better off...But the world I think as a whole...will be a sadder place..

However, if the United States becomes protectionist, it would worsen the United States economy incredibly....protectionism has the contrary effects when you implement them than what they wree designed for..

Globalization makes everyone better off because specialization allows for greater efficiency, production and a greater market.

However, your right, there are unforseen costs to globalization...but they are nothing compared with the benefits...

The worker in the US will have to weather through this...for protectionism will cause a total destruction of the US economy.. (as describved in economics)--get a textbook.

You DO NOT WANT TO GO THE PROTECTIONIST ROUTE...

however, I do suggest subsides from the goverment or a guaranteed health care and welfare system to ease the downward pressure on

last answerer---the one that says "join the dream"

you know. I think that this dream is a sad one. Because in the end, what are we seeking? Are we really seeking more materialistic things? or is it THE GAME of the system and being able to brag with co-workers and earn your hard-earned glory? Is it the pride..

That brings upon your happiness?

If everyone is the same standard of living wise in 2200, just think how many people there would be in the marketplace...You would be nobody. You would be an ant, and your individuality would be lost. Its a gut-feeling I have.

I suggest somebody see Blade Runner and notice the world in it. The replicant plot is bullshit and ridiculous. But the atmosphere of the world....that's 2200...that is a world that is over-populated---and sad...everything is a commerical to get you t o buy something...and life is just another tradable commodity (if you take the replicant logic).

Its sad...but it shows the sadness of life I guess.

What you are saying in your additional comments shows a good understanding of economics and of English. How welcome here!!

One giant, maybe; antfarm, how so? Unless you are thinking for the ant-ics of the President and the ant-iquated thinking in the Pentagon....

It means that the world is gradually becoming one. One day, not in our present lifetime but within a century or two, your economic prospects will be as good if you are born in Mumbai or Mombasa as in Mobile AL or Minneapolis MN. Everyone in the world in 2200 will be better off than today's well-off Americans. Do a little arithmetic, be conservative and say developing countries grow per capita income at only 3% a year, and join the dream.

I believe that globalization is ruining the US. It has undermined our power in the world market by driving our prices down and wages down, shutting down industry after industry in this country and taking them elsewhere. I used to manufacture jewelry but I can not compete with countries with a $2.00 a day salary. The steel industry, the clothing industry, the shoe industry, the toy industry, etc. etc. etc. Now the auto industry is moving even more jobs off shore. Instead of raising the bar here it is lowering the bar in the US while making a few corporations in the US richer. The other countries are also getting richer at the demise of US worker. Ross Perot was right! And these US corps do not care because they will get there money from the now more affluent foreign worker. Yes one giant ant farm is a pretty good description, and the bodies of Americans are feeding the foreign ants.

There is a problem with your question, because it's unlikely that a perfect competitive market could actually be achieved worldwide. If it was possible, then I don't know. Thinking about a global perfect competitive market and globalisation makes my head hurt.

P.S. I think I understand what you mean. Globalisation does not equal perfect competitive market. Globalisation is free trade among countries. Perfect competitive markets are markets in which there is perfect knowledge, there is an infinite amount of suppliers in the industry, there are no barriers to entry and exit, all goods are homogenous, and etc.

If you want proof, technically you could never have a monopoly in a perfectly competitive market, whereas monopolies are produced by globalisation.
