I have had no problem using the WiFi at motels I have stayed at that offer their own WiFi, or at the library. However, in other situations, when I have picked up a nearby WiFi source, I have either been unable to connect to it despite a strong signal (and this is one that IS unsecured and public), or I've been able to connect, but then not been able to get on the Internet with it (again, this is one that is unsecured and public). What's the deal?

Not sure about the first but as for the second, maybe you have accessed the network, but if the modem the router is connected to is powered off, you won't be able to connect to internet.

Not sure. Had the same problem. I'm connected now through my neighbors signal across the hall but when I tried to do the same with my sisters a little further down the hall I couldn't access the net even though she has her internet on all the time. She never turns it off and I could access the router just not the net. Also it is not illegal to access a free signal, only if the signal is password protected and you break the password is it illegal. As for the 0 security for the computer, I have software that will stop them in there tracks.

Just because there is a wireless network, doesn't necessarily mean that such network is connected to the internet. This could be the case on those networks.

hello
so you picked up a nearby WiFi source
do you know what can happen when you do that if that is not your network you are log on to you open your pc to who ever network you log onto and the security is down to 0 for your pc when you do this its best if you dont log on to other persons net work .maybe the person whos network you log on to as made sure you cant do it again by calling his/her network (isp) server . note remember (isp)servers are now catching out them who log on to other peoples network and they are calling that persons (isp)server to let them know that the person has been using other peoples network then the (isp)server cuts off the network and the phon company cut the phone line down and then there maybe some one from the law at the door to ask some Question

I guess that is the problem with WIFI connections.
It could be various factors...
Firmware of the wireless router/modem is not handling things correctly...

Or sometimes, I should say, the wireless strength signals is not as what it says....
