I recover from episiotomy in 3 days.
The episiotomy won't hurt because they always give you local anesthetic over there so it won't hurt if it's torn. I got 6 stitches from it.
They'll tell you a lot of stuffs you can do to get rid of the pain before you got discharge.

you shouldnt worry about the episiotomy... you wont necessarily have to have one. They will tell you to stop pushing half way through a push so that your vagina has time to expand a little before the head comes totally out. Most births now dont need episiotomy because of that. I did that and i also was having a 9Ib 7 baby, i only tore a bit and got 2 stitches. You can walk fine straight after the birth anyway, you will be fine.
I highly recommend the epidural though, dont take any notice of people saying that it can give your baby brain damage because it doesnt harm the baby in any way otherwise they would never give it to you!! I had the epidural and it was like heaven. Seriously the best thing that you could ever do during labour/birth. If you get one of those you will be numb from the boobs down and will not feel a thing, you wont feel the tear or cut or the stitches. Its honestly like heaven! highly recommend!!!!! Good luck with it all, and try not to be scared. Be brave and do it for you new baby! =)

I had three children, one epiduiral, and no episiotomies. My first child I was scared to death of the pain. All I can say is that women have been having children for centuries, if it was all that bad we would have died out long ago. Everyone feels pain differently. If you know how you are with pain then you are better off then most. I suggest taking birthing classes to prepare you. Check out your options of pain control with your birthing specialist or your OB/GYN, and relax. There is a tea made by Traditional Medicines called Pregnancy Tea that helps build the muscles of the uterus so that the contractions will be more productive. Take distractions with you to the Hospital.... Magazines, videos, books, relaxing music, friends or family.
About the episiotomy... my first Doctor was the most incredible Doctor I've ever had. He told me that there is usually no need for an episiotomy unless the child is very large, coming to fast, or the mother is not stretching right to accomodate the childs head. Talk to your Doctor about your options, what the procedures are, what you want and what you are not sure of. I did not tear at all during any of my labors, my Doctor was good enough to make sure it did not happen. If your Doctor does it as a standard practice then its just becuase it's the easier thing for them to do, not necessarily the best thing to do.

Don't fret it's not bad, the most you will feel is a burning sensation, the healing process is quick if you take care of yourself, it will be a little tender to the touch for a few days, but not anything drastic and there will be some itching during the healing process. What do you mean by damage? Are you asking if there is any long term damage or problems? If so, then the answer is no. It is a clean cut at the opening only, they stitch it and take care of it while you are in the hospital and tell you what to do when you go home. Really it's nothing.

Not every woman has an episiotomy; the doctor makes the decision while you're in the pushing stage of labor. If you do have one, you can expect it to heal within a few weeks. If you don't and you tear, you will still require stiches but it's more difficult to repair (stitch) than the episiotomy. Both take the same recovery time. Believe me, when you are in that stage of labor, you won't even be concerned about it, the labour itself will have you completely focused and it likely won't concern you. Either way, it's not that bad (considering the wonderful baby you'll have). Good luck, I wish you a quick and safe delivery.

I think the episiotomy is worse than childbirth and definitely takes longer to heal and can cause certain complications that will last. My labors were not that bad though and my children were all between 7 - 8 lbs. THey generally do it on larger babies
You can tell your doctor before hand you don't want one, but some do them anyway as they feel it's safer.
All in all, I thought that child birth would be much worse than it was and mine was fine I delivered all 3 without problems.
I never had an epidural or any painkillers and I was fine.

I had epidurals with both my kids and am very glad I did. While healing from the episiotimies, the thing that helped me the most was taking Colace, an over-the-counter stool softener. The first three or four days, I was pretty sore, but after that, felt pretty good.
If your doctor prescribes pain medication following the deliveries, don't be afraid to take it - there is nothing wrong with not wanting to feel pain! You'll rest better, heal better and enjoy those first few days with your baby more, if you don't hurt so much. If you breast feed your doctor will take that into account when deciding what to give to you.
Congratulations and good luck!!

The episiotomy was invented by a male dr...tell you anything? LOL!
Seriously though its like in sewing, if you cut a piece of fabric then streach it out it will rip more, that same piece of fabric you dont cut it and pull on it and it stays in one piece. You do NOT have to get an episiotomy. The theory is that its easyer to sew up, however when you end up with a 3rd degree tear from it well its gonna suck. Most drs will do a a massage on that area when you are pushing to help it streach out and not tear. You can request to tear instead of having the cut. I tore naturally because of the speed that my son came out I healed up alot faster and better than my cousin who had an episiotomy. She had a much worse tear than I did. I did end up with a few "skid marks" as I call them that the dr stiched up that didnt need to be. She said she did those because she "was already there anyway" I had 2 stiches on my preninum and Tiff ended up with 6. I was up and walking in 2 weeks and my cousin wasnt for almost 4. Also episiotomys can affect sex. You can loose something like 25% of your sinsitivity in that area. Keep in mind that its all a choice, and one that you need to make. Good luck. Also if you have a male dr they will probibly end up cutting you. You have to be firm about what you want.

Don't worry about the episiotomy!! Its not bad at all. They numb you before they cut you and trust me its better than ripping!!!! Just make sure your dr. only cuts you as much as he needs to. My first child I still ripped alittle but it wasn't so bad. My second I had an episiotomy and I was fine. My third child just came right out I didn't even need an episiotomy and I didn't rip. My dr only would cut if necessary! It won't take long to heal if you have the episiotomy compared to ripping. I would say at least by the second or third week you should feel just fine in that area. Its the inside of you the takes so long to heal. It will take the full 6 weeks for you to heal completely!!! I wish you lots of luck and don't worry it will be fine!

well, with my first child, I actually heard the doctor cutting me there. It was like she was ripping something but of course since, I was on anaesthesia, I didn't experience any pain when she was cutting.
But after giving birth, and the anaesthesia has worn off, then the real pain starts. Everytime I gave birth (I have four kids), and doctors prescribe MEFENAMIC ACID (pain relievers) every four hours. I never followed that. Sometimes I take the pain relievers every two hours (I don;t care about overdose but I was so afraid of the pain). And I wash my genitals with BETADINE (this could be funny but it worked for me) since it is used for wounds incurred after surgery.
It took about three weeks before it completely healed.
I was dressing up my third baby (5 days old then) and her leg just made a quick kick right into the stitch when I just gave birth to her then (i was in front of her sitting down). Imagine the twitch I made, but the pain went away in ten minutes.
go to this site, it could help you understand the procedure more.
