What is the origin of this? Is it at all derogatory? How common is its use in today's society?

It's not. It is instead a word used to describe certain kinds of fanfiction: those with many scenes of gratuitous, NC-17 sex. Usually people use it to mean Female-on-Female scenes, but it can be used to describe fanfic with ANY kind of gratuitous sex.

This term comes from the anime "Creamy Lemon", which is an explicit hentai anime.

This is as compared to "slash", which specifically refers to male pairings in fanfiction. This term comes from the categories such stories are placed in, like "Kirk/Spock". Because this is pronounced "Kirk slash Spock", the genre came to be known as "slash."

"Lemon" might also refer to "lemonparty.jpg" which is a graphic picture of very old people engaging in adult acts.

I can't believe no one here has heard this! I'm a gay lad and I've heard it many times! Got no idea why it means lesbian though, sorry.

I never heard of it for lesbians, but in Elizabethan English, "leman" means girlfriend/beloved/wife.

Where did you hear that?

'Lemon' is a term often used to say that a story has sexual content in it, usually in fanfiction or unpublished author's stories.
