EAST-WEST DIRECTION
Even numbers on the south side, odd numbers on the north, lowest numbers starting from the east.
SOUTH-NORTH DIRECTION
Even numbers on the east side, odd numbers on the west, lowest numbers starting from the south.

wouldn't it be the first built? the first lived in? the closest to something? Then one that is most east/west/north/south? The one at the beginning/end of the street? And, house never get named with a single number. It is usually in RELATION to some other landmark: number street, area/region of a city, how old the city graph outlines are. There are many variables, so I have to answer with a question, sorry. What house, in which city?

On my street, the house numbered 1 is on the east end of the street on the right (southern) side.

IT's even on right, odd on left.
The street starts from the "main area of town."
Say if main street ran thru a city, they'd start from that street and work their way out..
