I'm American and I've been to the UK several times, I would love to live in London someday. Has anyone done this and can you tell me what the transition was like for you personally, professionally and also what you had to do legally--visas, etc? Thanks.

London is alright. Living there you might find your self more easy angered at small things as the city takes it toll on your mood and body. Its a nice place but not somewhear I would expect people to live by choice. Look for some where close to London to live so you can just visit.

I'm going to take a stab at this even though I'm Canadian and I lived 60 miles outside London.
I got a holiday maker visa which allowed me to work for a year. I could have applied for an extension had I wanted to.
Check this site to see what kind of visa you will need.

Since you've been to London, you already have a head start on knowing what to expect from the people and the culture. You'll learn (or perhaps have learned) the annoyance of paying for everything (including a television licence) queuing up just to buy a postage stamp and the obession people have with their mobiles (then again, I couldn't live without mine when I was there...).
My job (teaching) was really challanging, which made it harder to enjoy my time there, but eventually did enjoy it there. If you live in London, you'll have the opportunity to meet loads of people also from North America, which helps when you want to have a someone to complain to and they know exactly what you are talking about.
Since I lived so near London, I often went in for the weekend, and after a while I no longer felt like a tourist. In fact, I was starting to avoid going to the touristy places because I got tired of seeing people getting their picture taken in front of the London Eye.

Have fun with your plans!

I live in Central London, infact I was born and bred here. I don't really like it here that much nowadays, I'd rather live in the USA! I've been there 4 times and it's great!

My advice, stay in the USA, it's so much better!

My teacher was American, damn she was really hot!
