It is easier. It sets the bar low on expectations for them. It is sometimes easier to get along in a man's world if they assume the role of needing help.
It really is better for women to represent their intelligence at the actual level and let the chips fall where they may. Those that pretend a lower intelligence level will eventually complain they are not taken seriously. It is a recipe for emotional disaster.
If you enter relationships with honesty, it is easier to maintain, even if there is some resistance to your intelligence level at first. It shakes out those that can't deal with it and those that can will be more respectful in the long run.
But, even though it is not good to do, many do and that bespeaks some level of intelligence in itself! Maybe they really are only as smart as the pretend to be!

Smart girls play dumb. It's like Columbo. Remember him? By playing the dummy he made people feel comfortable enough to be unguarded and reveal more of themselves than they would around someone apparently smart.
