Like most revolutions it was driven by frustated middle class interest. Common god fearing men and woman had sympathy with the crown. Many of them went to America to enjoy a degree of religious freedom not available in most part of Europe. Many still felt kinship with Britain and France was England's traditional enemy. Britain at the time was arguably the best run and most democratic nation on earth, so there was a clear irony in taking help from France..a country with no personal liberty or democracy at the time.
oh..and of course ..the French smell

It is possible some Americans still had bad feelings toward the French from the French-Indian War. Another reason might be that they believed French support might turn into just trading rule of the British for rule of the French.
have a nice day.

There was concern that we (Americans) would be trading one colonial master for another, that the French would take over once the British were out of the way. Also, we were not too far removed from the French and Indian War where these same French had been the enemy, so there was lingering resent over that as well.

The French were Catholic, and notorious for their harsh treatment of Protestants in the past. Most of the American colonists were either Anglican or some other sect of Protestantism.

the fact was that the average american was not in support of the revolution,it was the rich that stirred up people as it was them that had the most to gain, most people were very disinterested and were still loyal to the crown and england was always at war with france at one time or another so really they regarded the french as the enemy, and in fact were forced to fight ,a lot of them went to canada ,but you wont read that in any american history book,

The main reason was that the rebels wanted to win the war on their own. They were not opposed to French support, just French MILITARY support
