When writing the first draft of a book, what formatting should I use? Do I double space, and what font do I use?

When you're writing the first draft, use whatever format you like. Many writers will even handwrite some of their first scenes.

Now, if you're asking about which formatting you should use to submit your manuscript to publishers or agents (which, should probably be no less than your fourth draft), check their guidelines. Most want them double spaced in an easy to read, basic font (think Times New Roman or Courier). Something along the lines of a size 12.

But, again, each agent, publisher, and magazine has different guidelines for writers and you should research the specifics.

Manuscript is a author's handwritten or typed or printout from the computer. It is like a draft subject to making suitable alterations by the editor with the prior consent from the author. Any type of format can be used. Double space will be better but not compulsory. The draft must be legible and free from spelling and grammetical mistakes. The purpose of this would be easy for editing the draft.

For the first draft of your book, you can write it in longhand or type it on a typewriter or your computer keyboard. However, when you submit it to a publisher, you must present it typed or computer printed in "manuscript" form. By this, I mean you should have 1 inch margins all the way around on a standard sheet of paper. Use 12 font Times New Roman (if you are working off a computer). Double space. At the beginning of every chapter, go down to the middle of the page. The reason for this is that the editor will have room for his/her notations.

The title page must have the title of your book in the dead center with your name underneath. To the upper left hand corner, type your name, mailing address and phone number. On the upper right hand corner of the first page and every page to follow, you must write your name/book title/page number along the upper edge of the pages.

Double space, certainly, as you are going to need to edit. Use whatever font you consider highly readable, and large enough to serve that purpose, but not larger. 12 or 13 point, normally. I like Century Schoolbook, but Time New Roman is the usual default. Courier if you want to look like a Selectric typewriter. Also, make your margins at least one inch all around. Again, room to write edits.
