You -can- clip a hamsters' nails. HOWEVER, hamster claws are VERY tiny and chances are your hamster won't sit still long enough for you to do it. It could also be dangerous---you could easily clip his entire toe off!
Here's a better idea:
Get a brick. That's right...a plain ol' untreated (no chemicals) brick. Put it in your hamsters' cage---put it where he HAS to climb on it in order to get somewhere (like to reach his water bottle or get food). The brick will naturally keep your hamsters' claws trim when he climbs/walks on it. Problem solved.
You should be able to get a brick at Home Depot or a similar store.
Hope that helps!

you can clip their nails with either small fingernail clippers or clippers made especially for hamsters(which can be found at any pet store) Make sure you hold them tightly. and you clip them just a little bit. If you shine a flashlight on the claw you can see where the quick, which is pretty much a vein, and the little hollow region are at. You clip below the hollow part. Don't worry if you clip a little bit of the hollow part if you keep their cage clean. It is just that if you clip the hollow they could get an infection-but that's kind a rare. When you clip their nails be careful not to clip the quick. It will bleed and cause your hamster to hurt a lot. But you can stop the bleeding with cornstarch or flour. They also make special stuff to stop the bleeding but the cornstarch and flour work just as well. Good Luck if you try to clip their nails. Instead of clipping their nails or if you want to maintain the newly cut nails for a really long time you can put a piece of cardboard in their cage(a piece with little or no ink) or a piece of untreated would. Driftwood works really well and they like the bonus of having something extra to climb on.

I don't think that u do cut its nail on ur own.Cuz as some frienz who has answer your question said.U should becareful of their blood vessel. If lets say, unfortunately yOU are careles and accidently cut their blood vessel. They are difficult 2 stop bleeding.Cuz my friend experienced this before. It's so terrifying. So,bring them 2 the vet or to some pet shops where offered proffesional to help u out with ur pets problem.Cuz when the day u started to have pets. You are spending money for them. And this is ur responsibility too.I personally have 2 golden hamster that imported from holland. If they have any problem,I'll bring them 2 the vet or consult any proffesional from the pet shops.

I agree with letting a vet doing it.... at least for the first time so you can watch them and learn from them.
Even the vets keep that substance that immediately stops bleeding nearby anytime they clip -ANY- pets nails, just in case they cut them too much.
Check with the vet first.. for your little hamster's safety. :o)

Well...you can clip them yourself, if you have a clue as to what you're doing...you have to watch out for the blood vessels in the nails, so if you're afraid of hitting one, check out some more resources or a vet.

A little bit of toe nail is fine... but I agree together with you. Long nails are kinda gross.

I would ask the vet or a pet groomer. If your hands aren't steady you could cost him a toe.
