I think, it would be a good idea for students to carry cell phones to school for emergencies these days. I mean, it isn't like when I was in grammar school and high school back in the 60's and first half of the 70's. Things were a lot safer back then. We didn't have as many kids being abducted or students showing up at school with guns/explosives and killing a bunch of other students and teachers; at least not that I ever heard of or can remember. Although, I did get sexually assaulted by two black males, when I had to go to a vocational school in a bad neighborhood, and I was approached by another about a week later and had to defend myself.

I recently heard about some 14 year old girl, who was abducted and when her abductor left her alone she sent a text message to her mom where she was and she was safely returned to her mother with the help of the police. It's my understanding, sometimes they can locate a person by their cell phone when they are in trouble. I don't know if the system is prefect yet, but I hope they continue to work on it to improve it.

It could also be a useful tool for parents to keep track of where their kids are at, so if you are asking your parents for a cell phone be careful it could be a double edge sword with consequences you weren't counting on.

Unfortunately, I know a lot of students would abuse the phone. The person who asked the question even admitted it. I can see it already, students would be either talking on their phones or sending text messeges in the halls, unless the school set a policy against it a really put their foot down. Some students would use the text messeging feature to pass notes back and forth. I'm sure some would even try to use the text messeging or other features on their phone to cheat on exams, unless the teacher made everyone turn off their phones and leave them on his/her desk at the front of the class and to be picked up on the way out. If I were the teacher that's probably what I would do, and If I caught any student with a phone during the test it would be an automatic "F". What can I say, I believe in taking the hard line approach.

Yeah I think cell phones should be allowed in school, but not to be used in class, only if you need to call a parent or something. They really come in handy when I need to reach my mom or something, because it's a pain in the asss to have to go to the office and ask to use their phone.

yes, cell phones are very useful in emergencies, but like you said you use it for other things as well. it could become a problem where kids lose attention in class and at school.

No offense but maybe you should concentrate more on what you should be learning in school instead of texting and worrying about cell phones.

With your grammar , you need to be paying attention .
We got by without cell phones and did just fine .
Besides you already told us that you were abusing the privilege
anyway .

cell phones are only a disturbance in school, i agree with the person that said the school will be able to deal with the emergency. leave it to them.

Yes, as a parent I want my kid to have one, because I don't trust anyone out there these days. I trust her though that she does not use it in class. ONly for emergencies. To bad that other kids ruin it for the rest of the ones that know how to be responsible.
