It's a GREAT song!
The lyrics of the song describe the title establishment, a hotel where "you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave". Due to the lyrics' cryptic nature, a wide range of interpretations have been proffered. On the surface, the song is a tale of a weary traveler who becomes trapped in a nightmarish hotel that at first appeared tempting; as a metaphor the song may be commenting on drug addiction or simply the decadent lifestyle the hugely successful band had been caught up in.

It can have a different 'meaning' for different people. Sounds like drug addiction to me with 'you can check out anytime but you can never leave" meaning you won't ever be totally free of the drugs once hooked and the HELL of hallucinations and entrapment from them. However, I absolutely LOVE the Eagles!!
HOTEL CALIFORNIA
On a dark desert highway
Cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas
Rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance
I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy, and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself
This could be Heaven or this could be Hell
Then she lit up a candle
And she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor
I thought I heard them say
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely place (background)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year
Any time of year (background)
You can find it here
You can find it here
Her mind is Tiffany twisted
She's got the Mercedes bends
She's got a lot of pretty, pretty boys
That she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard
Sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember
Some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain
Please bring me my wine
He said
We haven't had that spirit here since 1969
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely Place
Such a lovely Place (background)
Such a lovely face
They're livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise
What a nice surprise (background)
Bring your alibies
Mirrors on the ceiling
Pink champagne on ice
And she said
We are all just prisoners here
Of our own device
And in the master's chambers
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast
Last thing I remember
I was running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
Relax said the nightman
We are programed to recieve
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave

I was always thought the song was about Hollywood and fame. You can get into the limelight, but you can't really leave. Perfect example... Angelina and Brad. They came in wanting it all, but now they want to step away, and the papparazzi won't let it happen. I don't know... Just a thought. It's probably based on drugs as the other posters suggested. I like to keep things simple, so I tend to lean towards the easier explanations.

It's about a guy who's been driving for so long that he needs to stop somewhere and get some sleep. He stops off at a hotel and meets this beautiful woman who is at the door.
As he goes in,he sees all the stuff going on and little by little he realizes that he's in a nightmare and can never leave.

An answer above said it well...I have always subscribed to the theory that it is about drugs and addictions in general. I dont believe that its about Rock N roll life because the metaphors fit drugs much better..."They stab it with their steely knives but they just cant kill the beast" alluding to the drug addiction and all the other metaphors everyone has already posted....the only one that supports the rock n roll is "All the pretty pretty boys she calls friends" alluding to the fakes that hover around you when u get famous.

hMM< THIS IS INTERESTING....I always thought it was about addiction of heroin."Hotel California"..meaning the opium trade in the west " Last thing I remember, I was Running for the door I had to find the passage back To the place I was before "....meaning, He can never reach the original, first euphoric high....."'Relax,'said the night man, We are programmed to receive. You can checkout any time you like, but you can never leave!"....meaning, you may possibly kick the habit, but you will always be an addict.....I don't know but its a popular theory.

It's a metaphor for the music industry and rock stardom with special reference to the LA Scene. Or maybe about nothing and they just came up with a little story with words while they were getting high.

Its about a lonely traveler who happens onto a hotel in the middle of nowhere where your every whim would be fulfilled. But you have to give them your soul. "You can check out anytime you like but you can never leave." Favorite song of all time!!!
