There is a debate between me and my room mate and I need to know everyones honest opinion. The problem is the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at my school has been suspended for picking a friend amongst other issues. The line was 45 girls who crossed and now a new line has been chosen for a new year and all of the 45 girls individually pick one of their own friends...My roomate says that there isnt anything wrong with picking your friend and I disagree by saying why not give everyone a fair chance and its also being dishonest, i rather someone picked me because I can offer the organization something other than just being picked by a friend..Which one would you choose? I need answers ASAP! THANKS YOU ALL!!

Hello,

I am a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. I think that there is nothing wrong with picking a friend for membership, so long as your friendship with them is not the only reason that you are picking them. If there are candidated who are better qualified and who would be a larger asset to the sorority, they are the ones who should have membership. In many instances I have found that when you choose a person based soley on the fact that they are you friend then you potentially end up with a group of women who have no real loyalty to the organization at all. They are just in it becauses you are.

When it comes to the selection process, I believe in adhering to the guidelines that the sorority has set forth as policy. It is important that we do this to avoid creating an atmosphere where potentials have to suck up to members so that they will have a chance to be picked at the next rush. It also leads to premembership pledging/hazing activities which the sorority stricktly prohibits.

Women who are picked for membership should have a true desire to be members in the organization for reasons that they should be well aware of after they have done some research into the organizations available to them. And the Sorors participate in the selection process should be of high ethical and moral value and as we say...Nothing Is Given, All Is Earned, thereforethey should look for more than thoses who are currently their friends. Again, it selection should be based on the requirements set forth by Nationals.

Now, if the friend happens to meet the requirements for membership and have a genuine heartfelt interest in membership, then they should be considered as serious candidates. If their primary motivation is my girl is a member or all my friends are members then they should absolutely not be selected and if they really want it should have to go through the same things that the young ladies who have worked toward membership did in an attempt to be picked up during the next rush.

I thought that was what they were all about. If you want to pick someone based on their merits good for you, maybe others will in time change too.

Of course it's ok. That's what sororities are all about - favoritism and exclusionism. Keep up the good work!

As wrong as it is, it happens. That is how I got in AKA. After you graduate and get busy with life, you will not have time for AKA. Trust me, I know!
